One in four Manitoba farmers insured against crops
Deputy agriculture minister Esmond Jarvis said last week that about 25 percent of Manitoba farmers are now covered by crop insurance. He noted 2,519 new signups in 21 municipalities where coverage was first offered, bringing total insured to 8,660 this year versus 16,141 in 1964. The plan aims to reach all farmers by 1966 or 1967 as federal reinsuring support expands the program to prevent losses.

Pair Nabbed In Big Fraud Deal
Two Montreal men Fernard Cyr and Steven Hall were sentenced to 30 months in penitentiary after pleading guilty to attempting to defraud Winnipeg banks of more than 70 000 and possessing 36000 in postal notes. They opened eight Winnipeg bank accounts with five dollars each and planned a restaurant venture while expecting an 8784 transfer. Police found five money orders and 76 postal notes valued at 450 each. Cyr claimed the funds would aid his crippled child. Hall offered a blunt critique of his associates. Magistrate Ian Dubienski noted the scheme’s planning and the prior records but said the bust halted the project.
