Manitoba Day Care Subsidy Plan Faces Criticism
A Manitoba group named the Manitoba Child Care Association plans to protest new federal provincial day care subsidies. Centers under the program may charge five dollars daily, below current Winnipeg rates of five fifty to seven fifty, prompting concerns about reduced services. Liberal Izzy Asper pressed Health Minister Saul Miller in the Legislature, who defended the plan as affordable for many Manitobans and aimed at aiding low income parents. Miller noted higher fees would raise costs for those receiving partial subsidies, while nonparticipating centers would remain free to set rates but without subsidies.
