How to Keep Worms Down On The Farm
Bill and Carol Kruse of White Rock faced a setback when about 70,000 earthworms escaped from Sunnyside Worm Farm last fall. They restarted in spring and now have roughly 180,000 worms, aiming to reach two percent of an acre. The price is about eight dollars per thousand, with hopes for two million worms eventually. the farm plans to sell by the pound as counting becomes impractical. The Kruses claim these worms are superior for fishing and soil aeration, using light to prevent nighttime roaming. They feed grain meal and organic scraps, and learned from California growers that worms boost orchard and garden production, thriving on manure, peat moss, cardboard, and printer’s ink.

Tour Shows Money Not On The Farm
Harph Muller offered public tours of his dairy and beef farm to prove he is not profiting from soaring food costs. Miller and his brother Charles, who lease 600 acres from their father, reported last year a loss of 390 dollars for 3,283 man hours, minus ten cents per hour. They borrowed money and lived on his wife’s salary, planning to earn ten thousand a year, which has happened only twice. The farm includes 124 dairy cows and calves, valued at about 400,000 dollars if sold.

Lead Poisoning Remains Common in Manitoba Cattle
Manitoba veterinarians warn lead poisoning continues to be a frequent, preventable cause of death in calves and cattle. Dr. Bernard Boycott notes cases come to the diagnostic lab year round, peaking in spring when young calves explore and encounter lead from oil, batteries, or paint. Symptoms mimic rabies, making diagnosis by a local vet or the university lab essential. Removal of liver or kidney tissue or stomach contents confirms poisoning. cattle can be examined even after death. Early signs include foaming, excessive chewing, blindness, dull mood, and low energy, with onset usually within 24 hours of ingestion and death possible within another day. Some healthy calves may show no symptoms.
