Clean Land Sows Outyield Weeds In Flax And Rape Advice
Agricultural notes advise sowing flax on clean land to avoid weed competition. Tests at Portage la Prairie show flax on weed-free plots yielding about 28 percent more. Weeds like green foxtail and wild millet ranged up to 25 per square foot. Early TCA and dalapan help control weeds, but clean land remains most profitable. Rape should be seeded after summer fallow on firm seedbeds. varieties Aric and Argentine type Olden suit different regions. Do not seed rape on stubble due to low moisture and past insect/disease pressure. Caution on flea beetles and overwintering pests on stubble. A list of upcoming 4H Beet Calf and Farmer Fed cattle shows spans May at Dauphin, Swan River, Cypress River, Stonewall, Bowssevain, and Neepawa.
