Betty McLachlan, a young pianist, earned high honors at Winnipeg's Musical Festival this month. She performed in Senior Piano Forte and Pianoforte Sol Beethoven Sonata, receiving praise for scintillating, well driven playing and strong rhythmic impulse. She advanced to the Atkins Memorial Trophy round but narrowly missed the prize.
James Everett Towle, aged 67, died after a lingering illness at Portage la Prairie General Hospital. The funeral was held yesterday at St. Paul’s Anglican Church with interment at MacGre.
The XR W Dobbs & Son hardware firm unveils a rebuilt interior with 95 foot depth, new plywood shelving, and modern displays. Front sections now show giftware kitchenware paints sporting goods and tools while a rear warehouse houses plumbing heating.
Dorothy May Struthers born April 1 1918 in MacGregor twin sister Avella and brother James survive her parents A J Struthers and Avella. She taught in Manitoba schools then worked at Eaton's Winnipeg before returning to MacGregor and serving in church groups. She died March 1950 at Portage General Hospital after a rheumatic heart condition. The community honored her with a brief service and floral tributes from local organizations. Interment in MacGregor Cemetery.
A Monday meeting will discuss school consolidation with speakers from the Department of Education. Chief Inspector Mrs Rogers and Deputy Minister R O McFarlane may attend, alongside James A Cuddy of the Manitoba Trustees Resolution. At the North Norfolk Manitoba Hers Society local meeting held Saturday March 25 in the MacGregor school Mr V C Hardy MacGregor was elected president Other officers elected were Vice President Mr C E Cole Aust Secretary Treasurer Mrs A Hay MacGregor Local Councillor Mr W Domitrack Sidney Publications Officer Miss M Lamont MacGregor The next meeting will be at the Austin school on Monde Mayeth at 8 pm The discussion will cover the possibilities of instituting a Lara School Unit
Former local girl Janice Wade was honored at a wedding shower held Friday evening March 24. Hostesses included Miss Eva Cooper and Miss Gloria Buchanan among a large group. gifts ranged from pillow cases to a woollen throw and a bride's book. The event featured a decorated chair, corsage, and a jaunt lunch served by Mrs. Gair and Mrs. Moore.
The annual hockey tournament drew about 350 fans as Portage defeated St. Eustache 8 to 4 in the final after a bracket with Katrime MacGregor Austin Poplar Leafs Sandy Bay Lavenham and others. Portage earned a bye earlier and beat Katrime and St. Eustache to claim top honors.
