Local Red Cross drive organized for Wm Bazak burial at Portage

Campaign arrangements for a Dominion Red Cross fundraiser are detailed with districts and volunteers led by Mrs. MacKinnon. Wm Bazuk, born in Poland in 1908, died after a heart attack. he lived in Neepawa and MacGregor before settling in Portage. Funeral held at Greek Catholic Church with burial in Hillside Cemetery Portage.

Village Council Sets Tax Rate 65 Mills

MacGregor Village Council met Monday with Mayor W. Montgomery presiding. The budget for 1950 was presented and the 65 mill rate retained, split as 8.50 for the school, 1.0 for municipal commissioners, and 25 for controllable expenditures. Expenditures totaled both controllable and uncontrollable categories, including school, municipal, social services, public works, and administration. The council agreed to sell Lot 10-14, Block 1, Plan 48 to Hugh Clancey of Winnipeg for one dollar, with land use for a hotel and transfer costs paid by the buyer. The next meeting is April 26. A trade shop and clock and water pump shop openings were noted, with M H Elliott planning to open by Saturday.

Mac Gregor Chamber of Commerce Holds Regular Meeting

A regular meeting at Memorial Hall Tuesday evening drew fair attendance with President F C Barton presiding. Delegates reported on the Winnipeg convention. a change of meeting night to the second Monday was approved and a special meeting will be held in the Memorial. Rural residents and school trustees are urged to attend Cobbe's address on this subject.

Rally Draws Large Attendance at Portage Memorial Hall

Friday rally bringing about 79 attendees from Portage im, Praine and Sidney gathered with MacGregor WI members and 14 rally in Portage la Prairie. The program opened with O Canada and featured speeches, readings, a musical contest won by Mrs. Geo. Croucher, solos by Miss Marjorie Giles and Una McKelvy, plus a film titled Mr Williams Wakes Up. All societies provided a substantial lunch and closed with the crowd singing We’re together for happiness.

Municipal Council approves estimates for 1950 budget

Ni Reeve RJ Shaw chaired the council meeting. A. R. McCulloch was sworn in as councillor after winning 114 votes with M. Hulme at 7. The 1950 budget keeps the same mill rate as 1949 and totals $183,320.79 with $49,671.26 for schools and $3,290.53 for the Municipal Commissioner. By-laws raise taxation and authorize a $100 machinery depot purchase. road work plans seek provincial aid for several wards.

Local curlers triumph at Portage bonspiel

After a weather lay off Portage bonspiel concluded with two Mac Gregor rinks reaching the Jewelery brackets. Norman smut Fink finished second in the Eaton premier event and R E Lye's set won third in the Curling Club event.

Hockey Tournament To Be Held Next Saturday

The hockey tournament is slated for Saturday March 25th as part of winter activities and the season finale. Entries close at 6 pm Friday March 25th. Admission 50 cents and 5 cents for refreshments available at the rink all day.

Foresters Hold One Day Bonspiel At Hampton

Foresters from MacGregor and surrounding areas held a one day bonspiel at Hampton with ten rinks and a largely female presence. Chief Ranger Art Butterfield and Vic Palmer organized the events while W Montgomery and Vic Palmer won the competitions. At MacGregor Poplar Point jockey match Court Hampton served hot dogs and coffee to a large crowd, with net proceeds of 50.05.
