Farmers may quit farming due to unprofitable grain crops
Ridgetown College expert Don Littlejohns warned at a Western Fair Farm Show panel that farmers in southwestern Ontario face shrinking profits as population growth and low returns threaten self sufficiency in livestock feed grains. He warned Ontario could become a large grain and meat importer if yields do not rise. He cited a 1.4 percent annual population rise and noted one third of regional crops are already shipped elsewhere. He urged stronger provincial incentives to keep farming viable.
