Manitoba School Inspectors Report Early Public Education
In 1871 Manitoba established 16 Protestant common schools serving 816 students. By 1881 there were 128 districts with 4 919 students, and by 1885 about 16 000 students across 427 districts. Inspectors, mostly Protestant ministers, note early building standards, lower teacher training quality, and sporadic attendance due to farming and seasons. Reports detail new schools, locations, and conditions across multiple counties and towns, including Belmont near Nelson, Bradley near Emerson, and Birtle, with total building costs around 8 000 dollars for several facilities.
