Land Banking Not Answer Says Steen
Robert Steen, president of the Manitoba Association of Urban Municipalities, says land banking won’t lower housing prices and may even raise land costs. He favors some government role but against excluding private firms, proposing buying land to develop and funding services. He endorses higher taxes on vacant lots to spur building or selling. Albert Chapman of the Union of Manitoba Municipalities supports some land banking but defends free enterprise and urges tackling high farm land tax assessments near growing cities.

Dutch farmer plans tidal flats vegetable farm near Pender Harbour
Frank Roosen and his family convert 22.5 acres on Sechelt Peninsula into a vegetable farm by constructing dikes to reclaim tidal flats. A five foot high, half mile long main dike will be built, with a 11,000 square foot greenhouse from Holland to grow tomatoes. Roosen expects 10 tons of tomatoes this fall and more next year after central heating is installed. The project mirrors Dutch tidal reclamation methods with soil rich in nutrients and minimal salt.
