Deer Viciously Roam Edmonton Streets Amid Wild Years
About 15 deer were killed while roaming Edmonton streets last year and several more spotted this month. A provincial wildlife department spokesman said most animals enter the city after mothers and their newborn fawns abandon the yearlings. The young deer panic easily and may jump through or over obstacles. Two animals have been captured and three killed by cars in the past week, according to Steve Ewaschuk of the wildlife department.

Wildlife Federation calls for live bait ban in Manitoba
The Manitoba Wildlife Federation seeks a complete ban on live bait for sport fishing. Live bait would be restricted to Red and Assiniboine Rivers and some interlake lakes. They warn carp could contaminate waters if released. They also push more fish stocking and stricter catch limits enforcement. Additional resolutions call for licensing of winter ice huts and suspending licenses for overharvest. They endorsed studying Atlantic and Chinook salmon introduction, though experts warn Manitoba has few salmon spawning grounds. The Freshwater Institute continues research and hopes to obtain salmon eggs from British Columbia.

Dismal Season For Duck Hunters
Manitoba will face a disappointing duck season as preliminary surveys show populations down from 1972. Biologist Ken Brace cites 2.0 million ducks in 1972 to 1.1 million this year in southern Manitoba with declines in mallards pintails and blue wing teals. Government officials may cut daily bag limits and a ban or restriction on alien nonresident hunters is backed by over 100 delegates. Manitoba residents hold around 44 553 licenses after 2 541 nonresident bird licenses issued last year.
