Birth Rate In Canada Falls Toward Zero Population Growth
Statistics Canada reports births dropped to 362,187 in 1971, a rate of 16.8 per thousand, with declines across most provinces and a shift toward near zero population growth. While some experts caution against long-term conclusions, the fertility rate fell from 2.31 in 1970 to 2.19 last year, with October 1972 figures at 2.03, suggesting potential impacts on schools, housing, and immigration policy as demographics shift.
