Seed Shortages Hit Linott and Raja Flax Varieties

Linott and Raja flax seed supplies are critically short in Manitoba due to rust 370, with Linott scarcely available in Manitoba and possibly Canada. Noralta leads earlier, but current rust risk may force producers to use susceptible established varieties. Seed handling and early seeding advised to limit rust impact. rust 370 overwintering could worsen next year. Linott offers higher oil per acre and strong rust 370 resistance, but scarce availability constrains adoption.

Ranching In Computer Age

Hill Spring Alberta reports a ranching operation blending large scale cattle holdings with computer aided breeding. Morris Palmer controls 48 square miles near Waterton with 5,000 cattle and 21,000 acres of natural grassland, plus 3,000 acres sown. A second Big Coulee ranch adds 1,500 head across 12,000 acres. The Palmers crossbreed Charolais Maine Anjou Limousin and more to boost efficiency, using a modern herd management system. A computer expert analyzes genetics, recording inseminations, sire lines, and calf data to refine breeding plans and predict performance. The operation employs multiple clerks, technicians, and foremen, with insemination handling about 120 cows per day and 4,000 per season. The ranch foresees evolving breeding programs and ongoing stock upgrades.

An agriculture department spokesman indicated a guaranteed income plan for western grain farmers may be outlined in the upcoming throne speech. It would involve contributions by farmers, the federal government and possibly provinces, with voluntary participation and funding from good and bad crop years. The plan resembles the 1971 grain receipts stabilization program, previously dropped, and would likely cost about 100 million dollars annually for the federal side.
