Butter Production May Be Next Curb
Dr. Cnarman Barry of the Canadian Dairy Commission told the Ontario Milk Marketing Board that butter production may need curbing to reduce surpluses of powdered milk. He cited 315 million pounds of butter produced in 1967 up from 79 million in 1956, while domestic consumption fell to 160 million pounds and 85 million pounds of milk powder remain on hand. The commission cannot sustain the 1966 67 price on world markets, current at 13 cents, and is charging price-support costs to dairy farmers, potentially raising the farmers’ burden unless powder is reduced by making less butter and skim milk.
