Virus Causes Heavy Crop Loss in Manitoba Barley
Dr. C C Gill of Canada's agriculture department told Manitoba agronomists that barley yellow dwarf virus is causing significant cereal losses. Field sampling showed many symptomless grains infected, with barley more affected than wheat. Losses include over a million bushels of heret barley in a 2700 square mile area, plus 49 000 bushels of six row barley and 517 000 bushels of oats in the same zone. Causes include early migration of virus carrying aphids and high aphid populations, with barley hit hardest due to aphid types colonizing barley while oats faced fewer vectors.

No Individual Privacy From Computers No Individual Privacy From Computers
University of Michigan law professor Arthur R. Miller warned that privacy may vanish as computers store vast personal data. He urged citizens receive copies of their computer files to correct errors and proposed double coding of highly sensitive data to deter snoops. Miller argued computers could anchor a surveillance system exposing homes finances and associations to casual observers.
