Site Chosen for MacGregor Community Centre
At the December meeting in MacGregor Memorial Hall chaired by Duncan Lamb with minutes by Vern McKelvy, residents from rural areas and the village backed a site north and east of Norfolk Manor for a new MacGregor District Community Centre. The land, adjacent to Centennial Park, offers space for ball diamonds, show rings, fair activities, seating, curling, and future expansion. Current fair grounds are insufficient, parking was an issue, and a spring vote is planned. Community Centre concerts raised over $100 and a New Year’s Eve dance netted over $300. Your support is urged to make 1970 memorable for the MacGregor District.

Canada Bow Out Of World Hockey
Canada bow out of international hockey competition and the 1970 world championship was moved to Stockholm from Winnipeg and Montreal. Earl Dawson of the CAHA demanded equal access to prime players and vowed Canada will not take part until the right to use top amateurs and professionals is addressed. The IHF ruling allowing nine professionals was conditional, and the IOC protest led to continued amateur status concerns.

CN Guts Off One Train
Canadian National Railways ended one of its two daily transcontinental trains on Wednesday amid union protests over layoffs. Spokesman Jack Skull said the cut will cause a temporary loss of 51 sleeping and dining car jobs in the prairies and 158 system wide, with no maintenance and operating crew figures given. Bill Matthew of the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway, Transport and General Workers warned of winter delays and service disruptions, arguing one train cannot handle current loads. Skull said a second train will run in summer and extra trains in peak periods.
