Controls Tightened On Barberry Plant
The agricultural department tightens controls on barberry to protect wheat oats and other crops from rust diseases. Common barberry has been eradicated in Western Canada and destroyed in Eastern parts as hundreds of acres faced sprays. New findings show decorative red barberry varieties may harbor rust, prompting destruction of Sheridan red Humber red and cardinal stocks. Evergreen barberry varieties are not suspected and interprovincial shipments barred across Ontario and Quebec.
