In late August the party discovers sea salmon in gill nets and spears large fish in rapids. Napayo travels to the Koksoak for news of Mc Queen and Naskapi. deer skins are scarce. Gold is found with skulls in river gravels as hunger, cold, and dwindling caribou threaten the expedition. Heather sustains the group while Alan faces the grim sense of retreat.
