Judge accuses parole boards of interference in judiciary

Vancouver Provincial Court judge Les Bewley accused the National Parole Board of massive interference with the judiciary after a speech by board chairman George Street. Bewley questioned why a parolee with a long petty crime history was released, while Street defended the board’s record and the three day pass system. Street argued punishment alone fails to reform crime and urged more community based approaches and victim restitution.

Schreyer Eyes Fall Or Winter Election In Manitoba

Premier Schreyer says the next provincial general election will not occur before June 25 and is likely in the fall or even winter. Manitoba minister cautions on grain handling reform benefits

Manitoba Industry Minister Leonard Evans told the Branch Lines Association that any plan to rationalize prairie grain handling must share benefits with producers. He argued benefits should not accrue only to railways and grain companies, noting producers bear extra costs in line abandonments. The St. Lawrence Seaway has operated since 1959.
