Prairie grain drying crisis hits farmers as damp grain rises
Prairie farmers face a mounting wave of damp grain after a wet harvest and a shortage of grain driers. Only about 30 percent of mechanically dried grain survived processing, and experts warn many on farms may spoil before warmer weather. With 1,800 driers on the prairies and limited capacity, estimates show 50 million bushels a month could be dried, risking substantial cash losses as wheat damaged by drying cannot be milled. Factors like wind, humidity, moisture, foreign material, and dryer circulation complicate drying, underscoring the system’s fragility.
