Semester system in Arthur Meighen and Portage schools

The semester system divides the school year into two halves with three to four subjects per term. Periods run 60 to 80 minutes, four or five teaching periods daily. Advantages include faster diploma completion, flexible use of materials, easier re-entry, and more individualized instruction. Disadvantages cover absenteeism risks, retention gaps, transfer difficulties, subject fit with longer periods, and higher reporting loads. Arthur Meighen uses semester timing while Portage Collegiate Institute runs a ten month year.
