Rapeseed New Key To Diversification
An extended diversification to rapeseed may uplift the dormant Central Plains farm sector in Manitoba. Portage la Prairie area growers could boost rapeseed and flax acreage as McCallister Pea and Seed Cleaners Ltd expands to handle both crops. The firm’s new facilities, costing 150000, were completed in 1970 and began accepting flax in December from Guthrie Paterson. The plan envisions storage for 61000 bushels and rail loading for six cars daily. A zero erucic acid Span rapeseed variety from Agriculture Canada will be available in limited quantities for 1971. The program aims for an output of up to 1/2 million bushels of rapeseed and 1 million bushels of flax with potential downstream oilseed crushing and refining locally. The Nipawin Agra Industries plant in Saskatchewan demonstrated the profitability of such processing, signaling economic benefits for Central Manitoba communities.
