Waste Dump Permit Sparks River Pollution Debate
The Churchill Forest Products plant near The Pas will be allowed to dump waste into the Saskatchewan River. Labor Minister C. H. Witney said the discharges would not pollute downstream lakes, while a pollution commission would act if operations expanded or new industry arrived. The Clean Environment Act will set standards comparable with neighboring provinces. The meeting at Snow Lake included officials from Flin Flon, Thompson, and other communities, amid concerns over Manitoba Hydro flooding Southern Indian Lake as part of the Nelson River project. Carroll confirmed the flood decision has been made.
