A morning explosion at the C. C. Kauffman Tire Shop on Front Street and Third wiped out tire stock, bicycles, and accessories valued over 5 000 dollars. Firefighters from Lynden prevented spread to nearby buildings. building owned by H L Williams. Insurance coverage totaled 3 000 dollars.
On Sunday morning November 20 the Rev. Roy L. Sprague field secretary of the College of Puget Sound Tacoma Washington will occupy the pulpit at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Lynden. Sprague represents a college under the Puget Sound Conference of the M E Church. The college recently completed a million dollar campaign for building and endowment.
The General Educational Board of New York awarded a gift of a Quarter of a Million Dollars to recognize Rev. Mr. Sprague for his ten months as a welfare worker in France during the war and his roles as Treasurer of the Puget Sound Conference and Secretary of the Conference Board of Sunday Schools. He urged attendance for his Sunday talk and his service to the Oratorio Club featured a gathering hosted by Misses Jennie and Tena Van der Griend with guests including Mrs. H. Bouma and others. Armistice Day saw Mrs. Wm. De Young and family travel to Bellingham.
A shipment of two carloads of pure bred Ayrshires is being loaded at Bellingham this week to be shipped to Santa Barbara California. The consignment includes four head from Will Laukhart and five from C Voskamp Steady on the move of dairy stock to the West Coast.
Miss Jennie Brink dined at the P. Dykstra home in Riverside. Marie Brune and Augusta Dykstra visited Bellingham. P Dykstra joined the A Bauman home in Lynden. Mr and Mrs Jake De Hoog hosted friends Friday. Mrs Albert Theel spent an afternoon with Mrs W A Reid. Will Meurer and sister Mrs Shumway returned from Seattle. mother Lizzie Meurer improving after surgery. Russel Gries moved to Lynden. Elmer Crosier family exposed to poison in cake. Fred Bray moved to Everett. Adria Veleke severe cold. Gerrit Noteboom improving. W A Reid visited Bellingham on business.
Mayor Ed Edson calls a Friday caucus at City Hall to nominate candidates for mayor treasurer and two council seats ahead of December 3 city election. The port and school ballots coincide with the vote. A Whatcom County Dairymen’s Association cheese factory will open in Lynden by December 15, starting with 25 000 pounds of milk daily and producing 1500 pounds of cheese under an experienced manager to ease spring milk surplus.
The Lynden National Red Cross asks every member to pay one dollar annual dues. Under Miss Elsie Sweet collectors cover the district to renew memberships. If missed, leave the dollar at First National Bank or Peoples State Bank.
Miss Mabel Ericson works in Lynden while Hazel Ecker takes tests at Delta school. Neighbors host dinners and visits from Lindquist, Johnson, Westlund, Vander Mey and others. A Delta baseball win over North Prairie 14 to 1 and a school board purchase of a new baseball and bat are noted.
Henry Shagren, president, calls a public caucus for Saturday at 8 p.m. at Lynden High School to nominate candidates for school director. The election on December 3 will name a director under a new law. a seven mill extra levy is also to be voted to cover 1928 expenditures.
Rev Chas Baker presents an illustrated talk on Joan of Arc at the Baptist Church under B T PLAD auspices. Fifty colored slides with stereopticon accompany the historical program prepared during wartime. A short musical prelude precedes the talk. admission is free, but an offering is welcome.
The Lynden Volunteer Fire Department will host a big basket social Friday evening December 2 for the benefit of the department. All are urged to save the date and bring a basket.
A Lynden Home Economics Club was organized Tuesday at the W R C Hall with Ella Clarke elected president Janey Palmer vice president Ivy Palmer treasurer and Kate White secretary. The club operates under the Woman's Relief Corps and invites all interested ladies to join. the next meeting is set for Tuesday November 29 at the W R C Hall.
Funeral services were held at the First Christian Reformed Church for John H. Borrink who died after several weeks illness. The Rev. E Joling and Deacon John Slatemaker led the service as many friends attended. He is survived by two daughters Mrs J A Haveman and Mrs D Rensink and a son John who came from Davenport Iowa to attend.
The son of William Boeringer nearly severed the end of his finger in a feed cutter accident Saturday.
Lynden American Legion held a masked ball at the I O O F Hall with gay costumes and a crowd of dancers. Prizes went to Mire Florence King for best lady costume, Douglas Slade for best man, and T R Burns for most ridiculous costume as ice cream cider and snacks were sold. at eleven the room darkened, bells tolled eleven times, and a volley marked the armistice anniversary before dancing resumed.
A boy and a girl were born to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Vander Yacht on Tuesday. The article notes a happy family addition and lists names and relation to parents. No injuries or legal matters involved.
Mrs Vander Griend received a surprise party Friday evening from chaperones and friends including Jennie Stuurmans Grace Stuurmans Elizabeth Stuurmans Alice Marie Kok Martha Kok Alyda Vander Griend Gertie Rutgers Kath erine Cook Jno Bajema Frank Stuurmans Harry Stuurmans Ernest Vander Griend Dick Geleynse Bendit De Boer and others. Ice cream cake and games were enjoyed with Mr and Mrs Fred De Hoogh among the guests.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer republished a New York story about Teresa Tromp a Lynden native and University of Washington philosophy student. It recounts her 3000 mile solo hike to New York Columbia University and notes her daring expeditions and aim to develop a personal philosophy to address life’s deep disease.
Mrs Charles Philo entertained Saturday afternoon for her house guest Miss Daisy Keane of Bellingham. Guests included Mrs W Yeoman Mrs H Caton Mrs H Boysen Mrs G W Robertson Mrs O A Sand Mrs L J Brown Mrs F L Wood and Miss Keane. Needlework occupied the afternoon and a luncheon was served.

Lynden boys and girls with good Halloween behavior are invited to a Friday party hosted by Marshal Jake Le Compte at Hawley's Hall. Younger children visit from 7 to 9 pm, older youths after 9 pm. Mothers are asked to donate cakes, with chaperones listed and a volunteer committee.
The Clam Diggers Club met at the S O F Hall to celebrate Washington’s birthday with a noon dinner and six o’clock supper. Members, led by Ed Edson as president, renewed officers and enjoyed vocal and violin performances by Mrs. Fountain, Mrs. Lor ing, Miss Rittenberg, and Miss Mildred Robinson. The evening moved to the G A R Hall for cards and games with a large attendance including A H Wampler, Miss Olive Berhus en, Miss Mildred Robinson, and many other local members and guests.
Mr. George Beeman of Seattle is visiting the Judson home, staying for a period and meeting with the family. He is recognized as a local resident with ties to Seattle.
