Beginning May 1 1919 Lynden imposes a 10 percent luxury tax on items priced above set maximums under Section 904 of the Revenue Act of 1918. The list includes carpets frames trunks purses umbrellas fans coats hats boots shirts pajamas kimonos and more with specified maximum tax free prices. Purchasers pay retailers who report monthly to the government. certain articles are exempt when made with precious materials or furs.

Plans for County High School Field Meet May 10
Lynden will host the county field meet and declamatory contest next week drawing hundreds of students. The Declamatory Contest for Group Two starts Friday May 9. the field meet for Group One on Saturday with schools Blaine Mt. Baker Ferndale Harmony Lynden Meridian Nooksack and Sumas listed among entrants. Prizes include thrift stamps for top places and a pageant with all schools Saturday morning before lunch. City of Lynden pays cash for first time in years
The City of Lynden called all current expense warrants last week and shifted to a cash basis. County tax receipts boosted cash reserves enough to retire outstanding warrants, reducing the old deficit and cutting interest on warrants. Last year interest paid was 361 dollars, and the prior year 1049.97 dollars.

Alexander S. Wilson, aged 82, died after a short illness at his son Otho E. Wilson’s home in Woodland. Funeral services were held at Monroe parlors Ferndale with burial in Woodlawn cemetery. He leaves a son Otho E. Wilson, daughter Nettie R. Wilson, brother J. B. Wilson, and three grandchildren. Lynden’s Victory Loan chart shows $16,250 raised of a $40,000 goal.

Corporal Carl Reid son of Mr and Mrs W A Reid of Lynden wrote from France about meeting two Lynden youths. He found Eylar Straight, a leave train guard, in Is Sur Tells Aix les Bains area and spoke of him as tan and well grown.
