A Lynden sale saw a grade milch cow sell for a record 182 with another at 180 as demand for dairy stock rises. Auctioneer Mike Vander Griend presided over strong prices for horses implements furniture and other goods, marking a sharp rise from two years ago when cows brought 30 to 50 dollars.
Lynden hosts a six reel moving picture this week as residents relocate through a sequence of housing changes. Clarence Jamieson leads, William Weber moves to Jamieson’s home, Frank Cruikshank to Weber’s, Frank Blonden to Cruikshank’s, E A Livingston to Blonden’s, and George Abbott moves a Studebaker and phonograph into Livingston’s vacated house.
The Star Mercantile Company completed a purchase of the remaining F. J. Barlow implement stock in Bellingham. The stock was moved to Lynden and will be offered at public auction later this month.
Arthur Oril of the Liberty Theater hosted school children from the district for matinee performances of The Man Without A Country by Edward Everett Hale. Lynden schools were dismissed early both days and marched to the theater. No charge was made to the students.
The North Prairie community lists events for March 22 a schoolhouse program and basket social to buy gas lights. Socials include visits by Mr. and Mrs. Strand and others at the Strand residence with multiple dinners. Members report illnesses and visits across local families.
Wednesday is War Savings Stamp Day and every person who can pay an income tax on property worth twenty five cents or more should own stamps. Mail carriers will deliver stamps if you cannot visit the post office or bank to obtain them.
The Lynden public library will stay open Friday afternoons from 3 to 4 to serve district school children. Three months membership cards cost 25 cents. The rule excludes Friday evenings while the new reading material stock is abundant and popular.
Prof E J Klemme of the Normal School urged light-eyed optimism in his talk Light Eyes and Dark Eyes at the High School under the Mothers Club banner He used 94 jokes and 37 poems to illustrate his cheerful message Edna McKinnon presided The program featured performances by students and a ukulele duet Refreshments followed the meeting
The Northwood Grange hosts a Red Cross benefit fundraiser on Saturday March 23. A thrift stamp pie sale will be at the Northwood schoolhouse with music and speakers by C F Nolte of Bellingham. Several small local social visits and school activities are noted, including a postponed Greenwood declamatory contest due to measles.
Taxpayers met at Haynie to protest a plan to surface 15.5 miles of the Ferndale Blaine road under local improvement laws. They warn the project would tax the township heavily and favor gravel roads as cheaper, urging county commissioners to block further concrete road petitions.
The USDA through Rep Lin Hadley offers seed packets of calendula and other blooms to Lynden residents who call this Friday or Saturday at The Tribune. Receivers must report trial results to the Department of Agriculture. Local social notes follow with guests and moves.
A farewell reception at the Methodist Church honored Mr and Mrs Clarence Jamieson and Miss Mary Jamieson with a program of piano solo vocal duet and poems followed by refreshments and games. Other notes include residents moving returning to farms and travels of local families.
Governor Ernest Lister appoints Wednesday as War Savings Stamp Day for Washington. Lynden residents are urged to purchase at least one twenty five cent War Savings Stamp each Wednesday, with Lynden mail carriers, post office and State Bank selling stamps to boost local totals.
A Lynden notice urges residents to reject War Savings stamps on March 20 and to spend money on themselves. The essay mocks thrift stamps and praises self-interest while discouraging neighbors from supporting war effort, portraying a satirical call to oppose government savings certificates.
Whatcom County districts will provide eleven men under the March 29 draft call, with Bellingham also contributing eleven to total 22. Recruits move to Camp Lewis over five days in Class 1 order, agriculture workers delayed for now, notices to Lynden district sent this week to allow two weeks of preparation. Additional small calls possible. 95,000 men to camps March 29, part of overall 8 percent of 800,000 second draft. Deferred and Class 1 selections will be used for technical qualifications or schooling needs.
Peter Koert of Lynden, a State College of Washington student in the elementary science department, was the only college student last semester to earn Aa above 95 in every one of his studies.
Delta and Sunshine area social notes recount dinner guests of Elmer Crosier family and gatherings at the Charles Ericson home. Events include birthday party for Mabel Keller, needlework and lunch, Ford purchase by H Vander Mey, Garden and Potato Club meeting, WCTU sewing for Red Cross, and local visits to Fern dale, Lynden, and Seattle.
