The Lynden Red Cross ceased activities this week as instructed. Secretary Mrs. W. G. Hemingway issued a final report listing thousands of garments and items produced by local women and more than 11 thousand surgical dressings prepared by the surgical dressings department.
Jack Kauffman has taken charge as the new owner of Lynden Liberty Theater and will modernize the building. A new projection machine will arrive in three weeks, with plans for comfortable seating, fresh paint, and a wholesome family show. Mr and Mrs Kauffman and their daughter Catherine moved to Lynden from Anacortes on Tuesday.
Work has begun on a modern eleven room residence on Front Street adjoining the Waples home. The ground floor will hold living and sleeping rooms with an enclosed sun porch and sleeping porch. Architect M H Gerlach and contractor Nick Boerhave lead the project.
Lynden officials report no fireworks or firecrackers will be sold in town due to city ordinances. Stores outside Lynden may sell, but local enforcement will be strict, making family picnics and outings the quieter alternative for Independence Day.
The Lyndon Woman's Christian Temperance Union will host its annual picnic next Thursday on the George Worthen lawn. Members, families, and friends are invited to attend. a post dinner program will be presented by children and young people.
Lynden shows a population gain this quarter with 33 births and 10 deaths. For the first six months of 1919, 58 births occurred against 21 deaths, according to local registrar Miss Tilda Trump.
S. T. Shumway of Lynden returns from his ranch near Omak in Eastern Washington and says farmers in that area face another wheat crop failure due to drought, a disaster likely to ruin many.
Announcement from the Whatcom County Dairymen Association notes approval to join Bellingham's 4th of July parade with a dairy industry float. About 200 dairymen with cars expected, windshields cards distributed, and reporters advised where to report on parade morning.
Lynden guarantors will meet Saturday at 2 p m at City Hall to organize local support for the Chautauqua July 30 through August 5. A. Heskett of Ellison White will attend to advise on the program. They seek changes to the Apollo Concert Company and may bring William Jennings Bryan for performances in Lynden.
W T Follis of Glendale buys two Front Street lots from Ezra Showers. An old house on the property burned recently.
Mayor E Edson appoints A A Bauman to Lynden city council to fill the vacancy created by the departure of George Scovill.
Harold E. Knapp purchased the R. R. Helder residence on Front Street and Eighth. He plans to remodel the property and make it a thoroughly modern home.
A large Lynden crowd attended the Japanese Tea Garden program by the First Reformed Church Christian Endeavor Society on the A A Bauman lawn. Performers included Florence King Frances Knapp Alberta Le Compte George Wettering Clara Bauman Grace Kampen Gertrude Schuy leman Louis Helder and Edna MacKinnon. Refreshments were sold and about fifty dollars was raised to buy new lights for the church.
Jasper Fadden leaves Lynden for a long pleasure trip through Southern Pacific points. He travels in a Pullman car built on a Ford chassis with electric lights running water and a gas cooker. He plans fishing stops and hunting and expects to winter in Southern California. He is the father in law of G W Robertson.
Lynden High School resumes debates on a national issue with the topic That immigration of foreign laborers into the United States shall be prohibited for eight years The program for 1919 1920 will feature coach Edna MacKinnon and five veterans Edward Kamm Elmer Swenson Edward LeCocq Wendell Bloom and Oliver Ingersoll offering spirited arguments before the public this winter
Harry Rinehart returned home this week with an honorable discharge from the army. He did not go to war, remaining stationed in Spokane until March.
Bernice E. Fale writes from Monts buar Germany on June 1 about a Lynden youth visiting French graves of fallen comrades. He recalls walking over old battlefields and feeling lucky to have survived. The note identifies Bernice as the son of Mrs. L. Metcalf of Lynden.
Clifton Worthen elected president of the University Cesmo Metropolitan Club and treasurer of the Tilacums, Cecil Jamieson named captain elect of varsity basketball and major in ROTC, plus elected to Oval Club Fir Tree Club Scabbard and Blade. Jamieson at Presidio summer camp. Worthen at University Summer Session.
G E Dyksterhuis purchases the J H Jacoby residence and three lots for 1100 dollars. Bauman Realty handled the deal. Lynden Canning Co. received its first carload of cans. tin shortages cause concern. Local residents Douglas Campbell and families joined A A Bauman for a social at his home.
O H Olson purchased this week a house on Grover Street near Third from Mrs. J L Dickerson Jr. Lynden Pioneer Realty Company arranged the deal.
William Zuidmeer purchases the old Smallfield property including a house and eight lots from Nick Boerhave for 2500 dollars. He will move back to Lynden and the deal was arranged through R. B. Le Cocq's office.
Mr and Mrs J W Rinehart entertain guests from Oroville Washington during the week Mrs Barteld and Mrs E C Martin are among the visitors mentioned in the social notes.
Mr and Mrs C K Smith host their niece Mrs C H Over from Seattle during the week in a family gathering at their home.
The Kensington Club will meet with Mrs H H Jamies on Friday July 18 instead of July 11 as previously announced. John Kranendonk and Gerrit T Schuyleman were awarded citizenship papers this week at Bellingham.
Johanna Schuyleman visits aunt Mrs Bert Landaal in Bellingham while E W Bayes and Rev Myron Cooley travel to Seattle returning midweek. Lynden mills close until Monday for the Fourth of July holiday.
Lynden plans a Independence Day program at Whatcom County Fair Grounds and Hawley's Hall. The Victory Loan flag will be unfurled beside donor banners as stores close for the holiday. The day includes prayers, readings, oration by Rev. G Hoeksema, music by Lynden Holland Band and Choral Society, and a veterans military drill.
Lynden residents join the Washington State Guard for a two week camp at Camp Murray starting Sunday. Those going include Harry Mock A A Bauman Angus Young Nick Boerhave Paul Bailey Harry Savings Bert Zoet F E Daniels Elmer Crosier Mark Whipple and Whitney Van Patten. Harry Mack earns corporal rank this week. Mrs J J Booman hosts pioneer ladies dinner with guests Phoebe Judson M L Jackman Pangborn Bates J M Beatty and P A Clarke. A new Chevrolet truck arrives for Farmers Mercantile Company and more Chevrolets ordered by the Lynden Motor Company for soon delivery.
Ella Evelyn and Hazel Palmer of Booth's Corners are visiting at the George Bruce and P A Clarke homes this week.
A truckload of W. R. C. members enjoyed a pleasant Birch Bay picnic last Wednesday. Neil Buizer purchased a Chevrolet from Lynden Motor Co.
