A Lynden farmer Ed Stegink reports 160 Beernink strain White Leghorn hens netted $4.12 per bird in 1918. Receipts total 1,362.10 with expenses 702.33 producing a net of 659.77 and a $4.12 profit per bird despite late lighting and home-use provisions.
Pete Van Dyk purchased the five acre Bateman tract in Lynden district from Mrs. Effie Bateman for $1,000. The Bauman Realty Company handled the deal and the buyer and seller were connected via a Tribune classified advertisement.
One year old Little John Zevenbergen Jr. died in Seattle last week from influenza. His grandparents Mr. and Mrs. D. J. De Hoogh reside in Lynden. Mrs. De Hoogh went to Seattle to nurse the Zevenbergen family and returned Wednesday after contracting the flu herself.
Ray Shumway was struck on the jaw Monday morning while unloading piling for the county pile driver on the Nooksack. His jaw was broken in two places and several teeth were knocked out.
In cooperation with Washington State College and the USDA Lynden State Bank distributes free farm account books this week. The books aid farmers to keep accurate business records and include valuable information. Last year Carroll distributed 96 books with 67 used and satisfactory results.
Charles Haggerson once of Lynden died January 6 in a French hospital from meningitis after serving through World War II and following the Hun army into Germany. He was known in Lynden as an athlete and a member of the Lynden baseball team and frequent winner in local field meets. He had worked in the Tribune office during his Lynden stay.
The Lyn den Township Board of Supervisors passed a by law requiring candidates for the annual township election to file a declaration of candidacy at least 30 days before the election with the township clerk. If a candidate cannot file in person, five electors may file a petition to place the name on the ballot.
Notices sent to Whatcom County Fair Association stockholders call a meeting at city hall on Tuesday February 4 at 2 pm to elect officers for the year and handle other business.

Collector David J. Williams urges Lynden residents to begin preparing sworn income statements for 1918 and deductions as the big 1919 tax drive begins. Farmers may deduct farm expenses but not stock purchases for resale. other income items are exempt or taxable under specific rules.
Lynden's basketball team defeated Mt. Baker Friday night in a large crowd with a 25 to 17 win. The Lynden girls fell to Mt. Baker 6 to 3, while Nooksack and Lynden junior teams also played. Next Friday Lynden meets Ferndale at Lynden in what officials call one of the season's most exciting contests.
The city of Lynden reports improved finances with surplus rising to 8289.67 and outstanding warrants reduced to 2967. The annual report credits progress toward a cash basis in a year. Lynden’s Armenian Drive raised 1459.87, surpassing the 1000 quota, with Dr. C H McLeod leading the campaign and Whatcom County praised for its strong showing.
The Seventh Day Adventists of Lynden sent $15 to Dr C H McLeod for the Armenian fund. The Christian Reformed Church mission at Zillah Wash gave $40 through the Lynden organization. Lynden High School freshmen raised $2.10 for the Armenians.
The Lynden Baptist Church contributed 20 dollars this week to the Armenian and Syrian fund. They were the second church to give after the Christian Reformed group donated 100 dollars last week. The Glendale School sent a donation of 6.59 dollars.
