The Lynden district rushes to finish the 10 year federal census as the closing date nears. The Tribune invites readers to submit missed names and forwards them to the proper agent. Fill out and return the blank stating I have not yet been counted with name, address and family size.
Lynden basketball teams won three Friday games against Blaine, with the first team up 27 to 16 led by seven field goals from Ralph Dunker. The northern county title race tightens as Lynden and Blaine prepare for a tie-breaker and a shot at Meridian, while Lynden girls clinched 18 to 7 on Lavie Johnson and Nellie Ecker scoring.
Lynden residents who paid income tax in 1918 receive 1919 blanks this week and prepare their returns. Returns are examined by the Bureau of Internal Revenue. adjustments may be made if amounts due differ. Penalties apply for understatements or late returns, with fines, interest, and possible imprisonment. Information reporting at the source requires $1,000 plus payments in 1919 and separate returns for each employee earning $1,000+.
Lynden players who staged the Play Down East last month formed a local dramatic club. Elected officers include President Mrs Nick Boerhave Vice President Miss Ada Baldwin Secretary O F Francis Treasurer George Wettering Manager William Baldwin Press Agent Ed Kamm and Coach Mrs D Mulder. More plays may be studied after Mrs Mulder returns from California.
Nominations for township officers will soon draw interest as the district prepares for the March election. Law requires names to be on the ballot to be filed within thirty days prior to election day on the first Tuesday in March.
The Rev J E Kanarr will speak Sunday at 11 AM on Faith and Conviction. In the evening at 7 30 he will preach on The Power of the Gospel. All are welcome.
Miss Ethel Leming has been visiting friends here this week and plans to move with her parents Mr. and Mrs. John Leming soon to Eastern Washington.
Mr. Ben Crabtree, previously ill, is slowly improving.
The Whatcom County Fair reports full debt repayment and a cash balance over four hundred dollars after a successful year. Directors bought land east of the grounds for expansion and expect new debt for improvements before the 1920 exhibition. Henry Shagren is re elected president. other directors named include Ed Edson W H Waples P M Lefrurier Mike Vander Griand A H Frasier and Will Jackman.
At the Lynden Creamery Company annual meeting a 30 to 22 vote approved selling the plant to the Whatcom County Dairymen's Association. Both groups will appoint a three member committee and an expert appraiser to fix price, with the condition that the utility plant remain in Lynden.
Lynden Post No 99 of the American Legion elected officers at the G A R Hall last night. The Junior Class presents a three act farce Eliza Comes to Stay by H V Esmond on January 28 at Hawleys with Donald Campbell as The Honorable Sandy Verrall and a cast including Edna Swanson Hoyt Horton and Lottie Jess. Tickets are 40c reserved and 20c general. show starts 8 15 p m.
Miss Lois Yeck of Lynden High School announces advanced typewriting students will perform typing tasks without charge until March 1, gaining practical experience. A small fee will apply after March 1.
At Mrs. D. L. Beckes home the Kensington Club elected Mrs. S. H. Lewis president, Mrs. R. B. Le Cocq vice president, Mrs. Charles Philo treasurer, and Mrs. Harold Knapp secretary. The next meeting will be at Mrs. W. H. Waples on Friday January 30.
The B Y P U will meet at 6 30 Sunday evening in the Baptist church to discuss the topic Christianity and Human Conservation.
Dr and Mrs D Mulder left Sunday for California as part of a scheduled trip. They were accompanied by their son and planned to visit relatives and several coastal cities during the journey.
Mrs. Anna Gaskill was badly burned Sunday night while attempting to kindle a fire with kerosene. Her hands, neck and face were scorched in the blaze.
High water washed out part of the B and N railroad bridge at Everson on Saturday delaying Lynden freight for the week. Three trains were held between Lynden and Everson and moved to Bellingham by the N P via Sumas. Claude Henderson returns to Lynden and stays with his parents Mr and Mrs H Henderson.
Ensign John Bay arrived home Sunday and stayed through Tuesday. Mrs. Sarah Davison of Spokane vacationing at Mrs. E. C. Downing’s residence.
Lynden residents are invited to a musical service at the M. E. Church Sunday night. The piano organ violin bells and cornet will be played. Law Enforcement Sunday was observed last week with an open forum at the church featuring addresses by R. B. Le Cocq and P. M. Serrurier on enforcing prohibition laws.
Seventy eight year old Civil War veteran Alexander H. Wampler, longtime Lynden district pioneer, died at his home north of town. Born February 24 1841 in Illinois he moved to Washington in 1880 and to Lynden in 1884. Survived by four sons and four daughters. Funeral services held in Knapp's Parlors with G A R rites followed by burial in Lynden Cemetery.
A sixty foot modern poultry house owned by H. A. Stauffer on Winup road burned Monday noon along with 350 two-year-old breeding hens 22 roosters 5 crates of eggs and feed. The blaze origin remains unknown but started inside and spread rapidly causing total loss beyond insurance. Neighbors helped prevent spread to nearby buildings and Stauffer plans to rebuild.
Henry Pyeatt purchases the house and three lots on West Grover Street from Mrs. Wm Redd. Mrs. Redd plans to move to Everson and Mr. Pyeatt will occupy the residence with his family. The sale was arranged through George Taylor's office.
C. W. Riddle sold his Edson Street house to Robert Albert and Henry Blow. They will move in with their mother as soon as A. Voelker, who has resided there about eighteen months, can vacate.
The class of 1919 held a reunion Wednesday night at Miss Hazel Ecker’s home in Bellingham. Refreshments were served. Lynden attendees included Irene Cheney Jessica De Line Lucie Cusin Louise Cusin Wilma Adkinson Clyde Wilson Floyd Rathbone and Paul Breen. Will Baldwin left Sunday for the Nooksack hills to work for Nooksack Valley Lumber. L L Spark of Seattle was in Lynden seeking to relocate with his family. Hazel Harmelink, visiting in Bellingham, returned home Sunday.
The Lynden Creamery Company annual report shows sales of $449,035.77 for 1919, up from 1918, with 2,311,781 pounds of cream handled and 590,613 pounds of butterfat produced. Farmers received 72¼ cents per pound for butterfat on average, and costs include hauling, freight, and depreciation. The Amphictyon Club and local social items follow.
