Income Tax Officers W A Holt and Dan T Hill will return to Lynden next Thursday February 14 to assist district citizens with 1917 income tax returns. They will be stationed at Lynden State Bank and urge filers to bring income and expense figures including interest rents taxes and salaries.
Lynden Cooperative Company stockholders re-elected B. C. Crabtree as president and kept the full board at the annual meeting at Hawley’s Hall. D. F. Smith was re-elected secretary, Conrad Axling vice-president, and Nels Jacobson with Jake Zweegman as board members. General approval was voiced for the store’s 1917 performance. A noon dinner followed.
At its last meeting the Lynden Red Cross thanked the Relief Corps and the Rebekahs for sewing machines donated by the groups. The Relief Corps was thanked for wood donated for Red Cross use in the U A R Hall. Mr. Harry Mack received appreciation for delivering Red Cross packages to Bellingham at no charge.
Northwood residents visit Miss Madeline Moffat while Miss Alice Day hosts a birthday dinner with about thirty guests. Mrs. John Axling marks her husband Mr. Axling's fiftieth birthday with a dinner, gifts, and a gold watch from family. Albert De Young plans to move to Stockton, California for new opportunities.
The finances of the Town of Lyn den improved about fourteen hundred dollars in 1917. City clerk R B Le Cocq presented a report to the council noting current expense warrants fell from 5991.01 on Jan 1, 1917 to 4655.49 on Jan 1, 1921. The report also notes asset increases in the water and fire departments with new equipment added.
The sale of the pounded fast team of horses impounded by Chief of Police Jake Le Compte is postponed to February 23 at 2 p.m. at the Lynden Town Pound behind City Hall. Two mares are listed by name and age, with weights and marks. owner may redeem before sale. Also, a Moers Club meets at the Lynden high school to discuss school topics with a program of piano solos readings and Montessori system notes.
Social visits filter through Riverside Lynden and Bellingham with residents arriving and hosting gatherings. A report of Tarl Reid's drowning circulated but was false as he asserts landing safely in France. A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Russell Tillman Thursday afternoon. Delmer Vander Griend returns from St Luke’s Hospital and improves rapidly. Kensington Club meets at Mrs. George Frick’s Friday. Rev Bevens and daughter Grace Bevens of Seattle attend Baptist Church services in Lynden. Mrs. W. A. Reid falls ill Saturday night. Mrs. Harvey Boyson visits Sumas briefly.

On February 13 and 14 Lynden High School will host a two day college of information on farm and home life with Washington State College lecturers. Topics cover soil fertility dairy poultry and home economics with focus on flood sand problems. Free registration includes a luncheon served by Lynden merchants and Odd Fellows Hall venue.
John Pen eleven year old son of Herman Pen died at Okanogan on January 24 from spinal meningitis. The Pen family moved from Lynden last fall, according to word received this week.
Lynden High School faces Harmony in a championship contest at the high school gym Friday evening. The game starts at 7 39. Lynden has won all its games this season while Harmony has lost only one, promising a hard fought showdown.
Another name is added to Lynden district 1917 births. A son born to Mr and Mrs L Bovenkamp during the year has been registered this week, bringing the total to 101.
The Red Cross received two sewing machines donated by the Lynden I. O. O. F. and Rebekahs with the Relief Corps providing the gift support.
Funeral services are held for Mrs. P. A. Oakes who died Tuesday afternoon at her home after a brief illness. She is survived by three daughters Mrs. Marion Ward Nellie Oakes and Ruth Oakes.
Funeral services will be held Friday in Knapp's funeral parlors for Andrew Matheson who died Sunday at his Glendale residence. Interment will be at Bellingham. He had cancer for years and is survived by a widow who plans to move to Bellingham. A brother came from Minnesota for the funeral.
Lynden residents learn tax increases across the district as notices of personal property assessments arrive. State levy rises from 8.871 to 9.660 mills and county road work pushes the total levy from 15.729 to 19.450 mills. Lynden school district moves from 12.5 to 16 mills and Lynden town from 18 to 20 mills. Personal property taxes are due by March 15 with a 12 percent delinquency penalty.
Lynden hosts a two day college event next Wednesday and Thursday featuring home economics courses. The high school building will house a nursery and kindergarten for babies, run by city young ladies and high school girls with no charges. Lectures on cooking and sewing occur in the same building, keeping mothers close to children.
Lynden Township prepares for the annual spring election to be held March 5 1918 at the Township Hall. Registration closes Feb 12 for original registration and will reopen after the town meeting. Supervisors dispense with a nominating primary per legal advice. Meeting opens between 9 and 10 A M. Dated February 7.
Lynden Red Cross schedules another shipment of knitting goods for Friday evening. All knitters are urged to turn in items before then. New members include Mrs. Mattie Bradley Mrs. Claribel Dewey and Miss Evelyn Scrimger. Weekend visitors and local social notes follow.
