The Lynden school board proposes funding $15,000 of warrant indebtedness through a bond issue payable in 20 years to spread the load beyond current taxpayers. The plan accompanies economy measures, including cutting manual training domestic science and music in lower grades and tighter budgeting across departments.
Charles Galbraith and B C Vander Griend, for USDA and Farm Bureau, conduct a Lynden district survey to count pure-bred sires in dairy herds. Dairymen are asked to report numbers of pure-bred males and females and grades, including swine sheep and chickens in their flocks and herds.
Lynden high school boys beat Meridian 22 to 14 at Laurel to stretch their season record to 9–0 with Ferndale and Whatcom games upcoming on Lynden floor. Lynden girls defeated Meridian 23 to 13 in the same matchup. Reserve seats are 40 cents at City Drug Store.
The Kensington Club meeting scheduled for tonight is postponed. If the bond issue fails, the school board will seek consent to close the High School for one to two years until warrant indebtedness is paid. Adopted by School District No. 309 board on January 30, 1922.
Installation of powdered milk equipment will be made this spring at the Carnation plant in Ferndale. The Buflovak system, distinct from the Lynden type, will be the first of its kind on this coast to be installed at the Ferndale facility.
Griffith elected director as the Washington Co-Operative Egg and Poultry Association reports more than two million dollars paid to producers for 200 287 cases of eggs in 1921. The net price was 34 cents a dozen, with Whatcom County receiving two fifths of the total. George H. Griffith named director for the Petaluma district.
Delegates Mrs Eva Thompson, Mr and Mrs George W Frick, and Rev Ek O Grimes attended the Northwest Methodist Convention in Seattle. They will deliver a report to the Lynden congregation next Sunday morning. The two day event covered missionary, educational, and benevolent work of the M E Church discussed by representatives from around the world.
The Lynden Athletic Association postponed the Bellingham game against Alaska Business College due to illness of three players. The match was to be at the Y M C A in Bellingham and will be rescheduled for an early date.
A Wednesday evening dance at the I. O. O. F. Hall featured Valentine decor and gay caps for all attendees. A luncheon followed, with committee members Edith Jacobson Ada Baldwin Esta Hickey Alma Ecker Nellie Ecker Walter Baldwin Ollie Bechtel Ernest Miller Nels Jacobson and Milton Weidkamp overseeing arrangements.
The W C T U will meet on Thursday with Mrs. C. E. Hitchcock. The brief notice lists the meeting as a local church gathering and community event.
The regular meeting of the W. W. A. of the Baptist Church will be held Tuesday February 7 at 2:30 in the church.
Charles Bylsma buys the implement department from Western Mercantile Company and will run it separately. Gerrit Van Leeuwen, president of the company, says the store building will be divided and Western Mercantile will keep the grocery hardware and feed lines. Bylsma will continue handling the brands previously represented by the firm.
George Breed of Shanghai describes China's small scale poultry holding where families keep 4 to 11 hens in the house. Eggs are sold via coolies who bargain price per batch, carrying 100 to 125 pounds of eggs back to Shanghai for wholesale dealers.
The text notes eggs are bought in Mexico by the thousand, priced 6 to 11 dollars per thousand. A Mexican dollar equals 50 cents gold, making a dozen eggs about 5 cents gold. Top eggs go to foreign markets in ice shells, poorer grades canned, and Chinese workers shell and freeze them. Mexico ships many eggs to the United States, with poultry feeding and fattening a growing industry there.
A librarian report shows Lynden library served 820 patrons in January with 658 books circulated. Fines and memberships totaled $18.80. New books include Lightnin by Frank Bacon Sister Sue by Eleanor Porter and The Danger Trail by James O Curwood. Gifts include Chief American Poets donated by the Woman's Study Club. New magazines include Popular Mechanics St Nicholas Good Housekeeping Review of Reviews Youths Companion and Mentor. Lighting upgrades improve the reading room ambiance.
Samuel Bajema will take over the Whipple Shoe Shop in Lynden this month. Mr. Whipple will move to Nooksack.
Funeral services for Wilmer Wallace Cruikshank were held at Knapp's Parlors with the Rev. Charles Baker. Masonic Lodge conducted graveside rites at Lynden cemetery. He died of tuberculosis contracted in the Hawaiian Islands after returning from Arizona. Survived by his widow Goldie Cruikshank daughter Dorothy and parents Frank P and D Cruikshank. a brother Frank P Cruikshank.
A Lynden lodge meeting Monday evening will welcome a Bellingham Knights delegation to discuss the District Convention planned for early March in Bellingham. Knights urged to attend. George Moe fell ill in Bellingham Tuesday night and was taken to the Bellingar residence at Wiser Lake for care. Mr and Mrs B T Wier welcomed a baby girl born Friday.
The Whatcom County Dairymen's Association sold 1500 tons of Lynden powdered milk to a New York firm this week, a transaction valued at over $200,000 with six to eight months for delivery. N. P. Sorenson was re elected president. the Lynden plant has produced 1,300,000 pounds since May and employs ninety in Lynden and Bellingham.
Whatcom County Farm Bureau and Dupont Powder Company announce stump blasting demonstrations. The first event is February 8 at 9:30 AM on S. Be McCaw's farm Northeast Diagonal Road. The second is February 8 at 2 PM on Frank C. Johnson's farm Fern dale Lynden Road three miles west of Wiser Lake. The third is February 9 at 10 AM on R P Duxbury's farm one mile south and one west of Pleasant Valley School.
The second annual beekeepers school will be held February 10 and 11 at Odd Fellows Hall in Bellingham. It is organized by the Whatcom County Beekeepers Association and the Farm Bureau with the Extension Service. Lecturers include B A Slocum and W L Cox covering fall and winter management spring management uniting trading securing the crop and other topics. A question box will be provided both days for discussion.
Mrs Cornelius Jager has shown very gradual improvement after a serious illness during the last sixty months. Her condition remains fragile but stable as she continues to recover under medical care.
The infant child of Mr and Mrs G De Jong is slowly improving after a long illness. Born to Mr and Mrs George Brink Tuesday a son or daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Robert Lowrey Monday. Mr and Mrs Whitney Van Patten left Tuesday for Seattle. Mrs H Ripperda left Wednesday to visit in Seattle.
