Suffering in Bible Countries: Armenian Syrian Relief Meeting

Lynden residents will gather Friday at 8 at the Christian Reformed Church to hear Rev. Gerard M. Van Pern describe the suffering of Armenians and Syrians in Western Asia. The Lyndon Syrian Armenian Relief committee lists D. J. De Hoogh as president and includes local pastors and leaders. The speaker cites 509,000 refugees in Aleppo and Damascus and notes harsh winter, starvation, and rising costs per person per month. All are invited.

Red Cross Grows Lynden Chapter With New Members

Lynden residents join the Red Cross chapter this week including Mrs. C. H. Fraley Mrs. Walter Elder Mrs. Emma Gaskill Mrs. Sarah Lindhout and many others. Local church groups reported activities and social visits while others note residents moving or ill with the grippe.

Epworth League Hosts First Winter Party

Epworth League members and friends plan the first winter party Saturday evening at the Methodist Church league rooms. The program includes games and refreshments and all country youth in town are invited to attend.

Starkenburg buys ten acres north of Lynden for ranch plans

Starkenburg, Lynden bakery proprietor, bought ten acres about 1½ miles northeast of Lynden from David Feenhouse this week for $1800. The cleared three acres hold a good house and barn, and he plans to establish a chicken ranch on the property.

Lynden Registers Cut After City Election

After the Lynden municipal election many names were dropped from the registration books for failing to vote under a four year re registration rule. Precinct by precinct lists show dozens of names removed, leaving 1523 total. Registration remains open at city clerk R. B. Le Cocqq’s office.

Lynden Implements New War Taxes on Parcel Post

Lynden begins collecting a one cent war tax for every 25 cents of postage on parcel post packages. The new levy, effective Saturday, also imposes 2 cents per $100 on promissory notes, 50 cents per $100 to $500 on deeds and conveyances plus 50 cents for each additional $500, with debts papers exempt. Steamship tickets, $1 to $5, and playing cards, 5 cents per pack, are taxed as well.

Clarence Lee Hamilton Dies of Heart Failure at 58

Clarence Lee Hamilton aged 58 years and 5 months died suddenly Sunday from heart failure. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Knapp's funeral parlors with Rev. Randall presiding. Born in Erie County Pennsylvania on June 18 1852 he had lived in Washington for thirty years. He is survived by his widow eight sons Lester George John Harry Robert Edwin Loren Jey four daughters Mrs Joe Lin of Silver Beach Margaret Annie and Minna three brothers and one sister.

Wartime Chicken Dinner by W C T U at Methodist Church

The W C T U will host a war time dinner Friday from 11 to 2 in the League room of the Methodist Church. All are urged to attend so teachers and businessmen can return to work on time. The menu avoids red meat and wheat and offers chicken, corn bread and Hoover dishes for thirty five cents per plate.

New Law Revokes All Draft Exemptions for Lynden Men

Lynden men registered for selective draft are restored to their original status as section 4 revokes all exemptions and discharges dated before December 15. The Provost Marshal General warns registrants to know their order number and comply with the law or face misdemeanor penalties up to one year in jail and possible induction.
