The condenseries raised milk ten cents per hundred pounds on Aug. 15 and Lynden Creamery increased butterfat by two cents. Milk now costs 2.85 dollars per hundredweight while butterfat is 62 cents. The 1917 high was 60 cents, not reached until late December. 1917 average was 48.5 cents, vs 35.85 cents in 1916.
The county superintendent reports an average yearly salary of 1029 for men and women teachers, noting higher county figures due to some higher pay in Bellingham. City teachers average 1244, rural teachers 663, with follow up comparisons to 1914. The county has 15037 residents aged 5 to 21, 11216 school registrations, and schools averaging nine months of operation.
Sophia Bye of Seattle married Olaf N. Gresset of Seattle at the Harlander home with a cream crepe de chine gown. Rev. Andrew Jonson officiated as friends and relatives, including Mrs C Ericson and Mrs A Harlander, attended a 10 o'clock buffet luncheon after the ceremony. Others visited Lynden residents sharing news of silos and local guests.
Every Lynden member attended the annual Elks state meeting in Tacoma last week making the town the only one in the state with full participation. Participants included Dr. B. V. Mounter B C De Long Lynn Brown P M Serrurier and Mark Hammond.
State agriculture expert W A Linklater urges Western Washington dairymen to seek government assistance to raise milk and butterfat prices to cover production costs. He cites a King County study of 89 herds showing average costs around 3.29 dollars per 100 pounds and losses despite higher production, urging cooperative organization to improve selling, with emphasis on cost recovery.
The guide sets strict limits on sugar stock in homes and for canning. Each household may hold two pounds for daily use and twenty five pounds for canning, with separate storage and return of excess canning sugar. Individuals get two pounds per month, equating to about six lumps or three teaspoonfuls per day, with guidance to preserve without sugar when possible.
Charles Philo and Robert Bowles spend their vacation week in Seattle and Tacoma. Herman Porter oversees the lighting plant during the trip.
Lynden officials announce the city schools will open Monday morning September 2. Superintendent William A. Fisher notes no major changes this year except German will be dropped at the high school. Elsie Sweet to head the high school and Anna Wright the grade school. Fisher plans to meet entering high school students Wednesday through Friday 1 to 5 PM and 7:30 to 8:30 PM.
After Congress approves the 18 to 45 draft law, registration of men will be held in a period of days. Arrangements are made and the date likely September 5 if action is complete by then. Registrars named include R B Le Cocq Lynden. Delta Township precincts. Mary E Swope Lynden Township. Bay and Bloom at Grange Hall. Ten Mile Township precincts led by Mrs Henry G Guckert Joe Myers Lucy E Boucher and John A Dinkel.
Mrs. Mary B. Haight speaks this afternoon at the Red Cross rooms on Women’s Problems Now and After the War, outlining social shifts and recovery needs for women in postwar society. The talk underscores civic roles and aid for veterans.
The Klatawa Club gathered Tuesday evening for a pleasant chicken dinner hosted at the home of Miss Edna Bradley.
Lynden residents rally to adopt a war orphan from France after the Kensington Club voted Friday to take in the child. The group will use part of its war fund to support the adoption and to aid in establishing furlough homes for boys overseas. The cost is 36.50 dollars yearly, payable monthly, with subscribers in direct contact with the child. Information available from H. C. Mrs. Geo. Shoup of the Western Washington Experiment Station lectured Lynden poultrymen at Hawley’s Hall on flock calling and related problems. County agent H B Carroll Jr attended the meeting with local poultry specialists.
Henry Kuchenreuther and family Ed Bostwick and family Mrs A Markworth and family Dorothy and Bernard De Neuf motored to Vancouver B C Sunday and spent the day at Stanley Park. Mrs Ralph De Motts who is at the St Luke's hospital is improving.
Lynden Chapter asks volunteers to deliver 1000 dressings to Headquarters. only 273 sent due to worker shortages. Appeals for help at Surgical Dressings quarters this week and regularly until war ends, with rooms open Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons and evenings Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. A few stray hours may save a lad in France from pain.
Lynden young men who have turned twenty one since June 5 must register under the draft law on Saturday. They must go to the local board offices in Ferndale Blaine or Sumas for registration rather than in Lynden.
Charles Kamm of Snohomish purchased the O. A. Ottestad ranch of fifty three acres at Hampton for 12000. Announcement by Taylor and Riddle stated the sale includes stock implements crops teams. Forty acres are cleared. Kamm is brother of E. J. Kamm of Northwood.
A Lynden reader quotes William O Noteboom describing France from a letter. He notes farmers harvest wheat with about three quarters of work done by women and comments on the country being far behind the U S in many aspects.
The Lynden Lodge of Odd Fellows installed officers Saturday night and held a supper. An international baseball game for the Red Cross benefit will be held in Blaine Sunday August 25 at 2 30 p m between Coughlans Shipbuilders of Vancouver BC and the Bellingham All Stars. Whatcom County sports fans are urged to attend.
Lynden women circulate a petition urging Washington's delegation to end liquor manufacture during the war. The document will be signed by many residents before being mailed to Congress.
The Lynden Red Cross appeals for sphagnum moss to supply surgical dressings. Moss grows nearby and must be collected before fall rains. Local residents and families are noted visiting and enlisting relatives with community activity including the Litton and Breen families and church sewing circle events.
A group of 49 men from country districts outside Whatcom County will depart Monday for Camp Lewis including Lynden, Everson, Blaine and Lynden residents. Notable members Curt Heider Lyman E Wampler Harry W Rinehart George C Palmer Herman Heusinkveld Peter John Den Adel Melvin Haugen Charles Bechtel Joseph De Bruyn Chris Larsen and George Palmer. George Palmer Harry Rinehart and Herman Heusinkveld are named assistant leaders of the contingent.
Bellingham will host a two week military training camp with 200 volunteers aged 18 to 45. Rifles and gear come from state authorities, and a $5 registration covers good faith and unforeseen costs. any surplus is returned. Applicants must stay two weeks and pay up to $25 total including a uniform. recruiting officers will serve Blaine Lynden Sumas Ferndale Deming Everson Sedro Woolley Mt Vernon Burlington and Anacortes.
Federal official Charles Hebberd warns no wheat may be used for feed unless it is unfit for human consumption or non millable. County agents Carroll and Peringer note emergency use allowed with county approval and emphasize seeking alternate feeds and eventual cessation. Farmers milling their own wheat may supply flour for family use, with eight pounds per person until October 1 and possible rule changes after. There is no limit on mill feed for dairymen if available.
Mrs Ogle travels to Bellingham for a month before joining her husband in California. Mr Ogle is employed in San Francisco. Miss Alma Ecker visited recently in Tacoma.
