Two South Plains Soldiers Killed in Vietnam
The week brings word of two Plainview and Lubbock area men killed in Vietnam. Pfc Johnny Ray Esquierdo of Lubbock and Pfc Juan Manuel Chavez of Plainview died near Saigon and north of the city respectively, with services pending in Henderson and Carter funeral homes. Chavez had moved from Rosebud to Plainview via Ralls and was a Plainview High School graduate. Surviving family members include spouses, children, and multiple siblings, while Esquierdo leaves a wife and three children. Another West Texan, Pfc Gregorio Castillo of Monahans, is also reported killed in action.
