At the Panhandle South Plains Fair the Texas Wildlife exhibit in Fair Park Coliseum attracts crowds as Lubbock students use free passes. Reese Air Force Base Day brings free admission for service members. Texas Parks official Harley Berg describes varied wildlife on display and speakers note balance in nature.
A three-person fatal collision occurred two miles south of Hereford on U.S. BRD near 8 p.m. Wednesday. William Thomas Cain age 59 of Plainview owner of Cain Motor Co. Josephine Smith Mayes age 53 of Plainview a passenger in Cain’s car and Ronald Charles Dobmeier age 25 of Nazareth were killed. Dobmeier died on arrival at Deaf Smith County Hospital. a small dog also died. Cain’s car and Dobmeier’s sedan collided in the center of the road on a newly surfaced stretch with center stripes not yet painted. Funeral arrangements were pending at Gilliam Funeral Home.
Estel Ray Skipwith a 57 year old caretaker at First Methodist Church was shot and killed at his home on EF Street shortly before 6 pm Wednesday. A 38 caliber revolver with five live rounds and one empty shell was found in the living room. One person was questioned as police investigated the fatal shooting. Funeral arrangements were pending at Henderson Funeral Home. Survivors include his wife a brother and two sisters. Border harassment in Berlin as Communist guards interfere with meat delivery and West Berlin emergency passes face new limits unless an agreement is signed by 5 pm.
Gary Wilkins, 25, accused of killing three relatives, escaped Boerne jail. Roadblocks were set along routes out of the hill country town 35 miles northeast of San Antonio as authorities pursued him tonight.
The United States warned North Viet Nam against conducting war crimes trials for captured American pilots and warned such trials would be a smokescreen for reprisals. North Viet Nam said pilots are war criminals. Executions of U.S. flyers by the Viet Cong in the south were recently condemned as brutal murders.
A Denver area quake rattled residents and cracked plaster amid aftershocks from an underground fault active since 1962. The 3 pm tremor reached magnitude 4 on the Richter scale, with four aftershocks in 4.5 hours ranging 2.1 to 3.4. Experts compare it to earlier Denver quakes and note two strong shocks in the month, frightening locals including Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Stuart who feared a toppled tree near their homes.
A group of 15 items about the sinking of President John F Kennedy's PT Boat 109 in World War I sold at auction for 1500. The Carnegie Bookshop of New York purchased the lot including handwritten letters by the late president to the widow of a shipmate.
Cotton Growers Inc. elected a slate of area cotton producers as new officers and approved study of a proposed foundation to research new uses for West Texas cotton. The board met at Johnson House Restaurant before PCG’s 9:30 a.m. Saturday meeting in Lubbock Municipal Auditorium. They also approved updating by laws and heard boll weevil control progress reported as going great.
J D Smith of Littlefield is elected president of Plains Cotton Growers Inc the organization’s fourth leader since inception. Don Anderson of Crosby County becomes vice president and W L Preacher Eddleman of Palmer County serves as secretary treasurer for 1965 66. Roy Forkner of Lubbock rotates to board chair. The House killed the Senate backed District of Columbia home rule proposal and approved a substitute referendum plan. If voters say yes a charter commission would study city government, then Congress would decide final approval. The move signals uncertain fate for home rule as Senate and House clash. A separate three alarm fire at Universal-International Movie Studios in Studio City caused no deaths or injuries.
B DOBBINS recovered from a 1961 cerebral hemorrhage and, on his 67th birthday, continues an 11 hour daily schedule at a downtown parking garage. He credits work with restoring thought processes and memory after nine months of unconsciousness and a return to activity in early 1963. He left retirement to resume labor and stay active.
Soviet Communist Party chief Leonid Brezhnev warned that the Vietnam war has complicated Soviet American relations and shows a trend toward freezing. He said normalization with the United States is incompatible with American aggression in Vietnam and that Moscow will continue aiding North Vietnam.
