The Panhandle South Plains Fair closed its 51st season with a record closing attendance of 58,479 at Fair Park, pushing six day gate to a new high of 275,208. The total surpassed 1967 and neared the 1954 opening turnout, with strong nighttime crowds despite a Texas Tech football game. Pat Boone Show drew 5,116 across two performances.

Youth Dies After Balcony Plunge at UC Berkeley
Daniel Thomas Gebhard, 22, plunged from the third floor balcony of Eshleman Hall on the University of California campus after a crowd laughed. He died nine hours later at Herrick Memorial Hospital in Berkeley. Witnesses said he had been selling newspapers nearby earlier. Gebhard’s girlfriend, who was among the onlookers, said they arrived in Berkeley five days earlier from the East Coast. his parents live in Milwaukee.

Fire Out Of Control on Pike's Peak Slope
A forest fire erupted in the Pike National Forest near the Pike's Peak toll road near Cascade. Smoke rose high enough to be seen in Colorado Springs about 25 miles away as a north wind hampered firefighters and the blaze was reported out of control early in the afternoon.
