Judith Anne Ford, Miss America 1969, leaves Atlantic City for a year of travel and appearances. She plans about 200000 miles of events, starting with a Niagara Falls visit, after fitting wardrobes in New York and saying she remains a tomboy at heart.
Secretary of Defense Clark M. Clifford rejected a Republican forecast that troop levels in Vietnam would fall by next June. He said the United States will continue to build toward the 549,500 authorized by Congress, noting the present level is about 15,000 below that mark and that no reductions are planned. The remarks challenged VP Humphrey and echoed Nixon’s caution about any cuts before negotiators show progress. Attendance at the event reached 144,898 with the first annual fiddlers contest and large show interest, boosting overall turnout past 1966 figures.

FBI says two 19 year olds Carol Ann Goskey and Glenn Emerson Morris conspired to extort coin broker Richard Muniz by sending threats and letters to press for a confession. They prompted banks from New York to Atlanta to cut prime rates and led to federal charges. Muniz and his family faced two months of terror including calls letters and threats even reaching the White House. Police say Muniz was not involved in any killing.
Ford Motor Co. announced the smallest price rise among the big three for 1969 cars, up an average 47 dollars or 1.6 percent. General Motors followed with an average 49 dollar increase, about 1 percent. Chrysler, which first announced on Sept 9, raised prices by 84 dollars or 29 percent and was expected to adjust to industry levels.
After a heated debate a House-Senate conference sent a one year extension of the farm program to President Johnson. The vote was 189 to 172 with a payment limit added by the House and no such cap in the Senate version.
City officials planned to decide on a tax rate reduction for Lubbock residents and approve 2.5 million in airport revenue bonds as part of a 4.2 million emergency airport project package. The council debated a 1.3 cent tax cut, budget changes, and projected fund balances amid rising revenues and costs.
In downtown Montreal three men shot two Brink's Express guards during a delivery to a Bank of Montreal branch in the Place du Canada Building. The attackers fled with 209000 after an elevator ambush. one guard suffered a gunshot wound to the head, the other a shoulder wound.
