The 43rd Panhandle South Plains Fair launches with Ice Capades at 3 p.m. today and a 10 a.m. Monday parade through downtown Lubbock. The “Show Window of the South Plains” runs through Saturday at fairgrounds east of Avenue A, between East Broad Way and Mackenzie Park Freeway, with an expected crowd near 189,000. the current record attendance is 178,042 set in 1957.
After unsettled weather, Fair Park opens a week of festivities with Ice Capades at the Coliseum this afternoon. Ice shows run 3 pm and 8 30 pm daily Monday through Thursday with Friday timings 1 30 pm and 5 30 pm. Monday is area school day and attendance is expected to break records. Free-entry days are listed among other events.
Tropical storm Florence gusts forced postponement of the Atlas-Able moon rocket launch. With seven minutes to go, the crew halted the countdown and will attempt again as weather permits. If not fired by Tuesday, the attempt is postponed 28 days.
The World’s first atomic powered aircraft carrier Enterprise was floated off its building blocks and christened Enterprise. Mrs. William O. Franke smashed a bottle on the bow as Adin Burke, chief of naval operations, hailed the 20th foot 85 550 ton ship as a symbol of liberty and national strength. The carrier’s eight nuclear reactors will let it cruise the world without refueling.

Mrs Wayne Cordle 21 of Lafayette Georgia crawled into a narrow 40 foot well to reach her unconscious 17 month old daughter Renee.
