Evans leads Washington GOP ticket with black lieutenant governor candidate
Agent Evans will head the Washington GOP ticket for the November election. Arthur Fletcher, a Negro, won the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor, defeating hydroplane racer Bill Muncey. John J. O’Connell won the Democratic nomination for governor, defeating Martin Durkan. Magnuson was renominated in the Senate race. Metcalf challenges him in November. Incumbents were renominated for all seven House seats.

Milovan Djilas, a Yugoslav writer and former Tito insider who opposed Soviet policy, will join Princeton University as a faculty member this fall. Djilas, 57, authored The New Class and Conversations with Stalin and was imprisoned for eight years on anti Yugoslav propaganda charges before his January 1967 release.
