One man died and six were injured in a three vehicle crash 11 miles south of Lubbock on U S 87. Three Lubbock Christian High School cheerleaders were among the injured en route to a Wilson football game.
Heavy snows and rain moved through Colorado and the South Plains with fog lowering visibility. Lubbock reached a high of 68 on Friday as temperatures tumbled to the 40s, with up to an inch of rainfall reported downtown and more in surrounding areas. A 30 percent chance of more rain was forecast, and temperatures in the 40s to 50s accompanied the Texas Tech New Mexico State game.
Debbie Wright from Tahoka won the South Plains Maid of Cotton for 1971 at Tahoka, wearing a cotton velveteen gown and crowned by her predecessor. First runner up was Ann Edwards and second runner up Linda Young, both Tech students. Wright will compete in Memphis in December as ambassador for the cotton industry.

A 15 year old girl was found battered and unconscious near a rural road west of Lamesa. She was taken to Methodist Hospital in Lubbock in serious condition. Authorities believe she was assaulted late Thursday night after planning to hitchhike to Lubbock. Her family, from 7510 Oth St., was notified. Police continued the investigation Friday with a report from the sheriff and local officials.
