Shoup to speak at Texas Tech Century Club dinner

Gen. David M. Shoup one of the nation’s top military leaders will address the Texas Tech Century Club dinner Oct. 26 and join Homecoming activities. Rep. Mahon confirms the speaker, praising Shoup’s defense service and Washington influence. About 400 guests expected for the 6 p.m. event at Texas Tech.

Two Die In Gaines County Thunderstorm Crash

In Gaines County a 3:45 p.m. collision six miles south of Denver City killed John Doyle Bonner 28 and Bill Townsend 25 both from Denver City. A Cotton Center area wreck killed 63 year old Mrs W H Loyd Abernathy. Four others were injured including 16 year old Jackie Green and his mother Mrs Earl Green. The toll for the year rose to 121.

Storms Hit State Again Cause Fatalities and Floods

Violent thunderstorms across Texas killed one man by lightning and two in a traffic crash during a rainstorm. A tornado touched down near Corpus Christi with no injuries reported. The Port Lavaca casualty was Carl Benedict Hermes, 40, struck while fishing. Two Denver City men died in a crash south of the city amid the storm. Showers persisted on the South Plains with up to 3.6 inches in narrow pockets and varied rainfall reported at Snyder, Fluvanna, Dunn, Ira, and Knapp.

A 16 month old boy William David Matthews died in a Wichita Falls hospital after drinking ant poison found on the back porch. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Matthews of Wichita Falls.

Meredith to register at Ole Miss amid marshals escort
