A two day Mexican Independence Day observance at Fair Park Coliseum in Lubbock concluded Monday night after a 15,000-strong downtown parade. Lubbock County juvenile probation supervisor Lyn Turner guides over 1,000 youths yearly, handling cases from homicide to truancy. In 1967 his office probed 1,125 cases referred by the police, with training schools used for the more serious or unresponsive youths. Turner, elected president of the Can Farley’s Boys Ranch alumni, runs a cramped third floor office where counseling begins and, if needed, youths are sent to state training schools in Gatesville, Crockett, or Gainesville.

A cold front moved into Texas breaking a dry spell and pulling scattered showers into the South Plains. Severe storms erupted in South Texas with temperatures near 90s. A second surge cooled the Hub City by night, dropping temperatures eight degrees in an hour and bringing about .09 inch of rain.
