R J Matheny a Shop Rite Foods worker narrowly escaped a fatal blaze that destroyed the 2222 Ave A warehouse. He was hospitalized for smoke inhalation after being trapped in a restroom as heat and smoke overtook the area.
Chile's military junta used jet fighters tanks and heavy guns to crush Allende loyalists after warning surrender or be shot on the spot. Early estimates put deaths at 500 to 1,000 during the three hour assault on La Moneda and surrounding combat, with more than 1,000 arrested.
