A sophomore from Lubbock region named Fabbens Cotton Festival Queen follows in the footsteps of her sister in the city. The edition also notes ongoing national agenda items such as a farm bill and immigration in Senate action this week.
A late Sunday night crash on the Tahoka highway one mile south of city limits left one man dead and two others seriously injured. The deceased was tentatively identified as Pentecoste Garcia of Slaton. The report notes further dangers from a lingering gas issue in the battered area.
Indian forces claimed a major battlefield victory on the northwest plains as U Thant arrived for a peace mission. Pakistan said it repelled the Indian thrust with heavy losses. A first American death in the fighting was reported by Radio Pakistan. an unidentified American missionary was killed in an East Pakistan air raid on Friday night.
A Sunday report from Atlantic City cites a chemist and team achieving a linked connection between two life essential molecules under plausible early Earth conditions. NASA scientist Dr Cyril Ponnamperuma described the experiments to the American Chemical Society on the eve of its national convention, as researchers pursue clues on life’s beginnings from simple chemicals and solar energy.
The mishap occurred after 10 pm as a truck and auto traveling north collided. Harold Pope said the car attempted to pass then swerved behind the truck before skidding into it. The auto driver Garcia died. Garcia passenger Rodriguez Garcia and Mary Garcia were listed in fair condition at West Texas Hospital. Firemen cleaned up fuel spills at the scene. Services for the victim are pending at Sanders Funeral Home.
A late night butane tank explosion in a Carlisle trailer park injured Melvin Rust and companion Richard Gambrell. Gambrell sustained burns to both arms and face and was hospitalised. Rust received treatment for burns on one hand and was released.
A fatal crash occurred on the Taboka Pichwes south of Lubbock when a car skidded into a truck, killing one man and seriously injuring two others. The incident happened Sunday evening.

The Texas Tech campus opened for a new school year with more than 15 000 students streaming in.
