Disaster in Shannon River mud halts rescue efforts
Rescue workers combed Shannon estuary mud banks to recover victims of the President Air Lines DC-6 crash that killed 83 people including 65 Germans and several Europeans plus a six member U.S. crew. The plane, taking off for New York in fog, disappeared into the estuary mud as tide rose, with 63 bodies recovered before the tide interrupted operations. The crew included Capt. Burglar Caught After K9 Unit Chases Looters
A 38-year-old Lubbock man was arrested after a break in at Vivian's Truck Stop on Slaton Highway. Police and a K9 unit chased him from the scene as officers reported a 35 cent missing from a cigarette machine and another coin slot opened with no loss. The suspect, Chester Victor Gudel of 1108 17th Street, signed a statement admitting the break in. Other Sunday break-ins included a roll of wrapping paper at Fourth Street Automatic Laundry.

Satellite captures first space photos of Hurricane Carla
Tiros III weather satellite relayed Sunday the first pictures of Hurricane Carla from space to a tracking station. Images were sent via photo facsimile to the National Weather Center Suitland Maryland and will be forwarded to Gulf Coast weather bureaus. Tiros III, a 920 pound capsule launched July 12 from Cape Canaveral, scans storms by television from 450 miles to 1000 miles in space.
