Big City vote defeats Texas Senate expansion plan

Texas voters reject a proposal to expand the State Senate from 31 to 39 members with 126163 against and 77049 for from 236 counties. Big cities showed strong opposition while some counties favored expansion. The defeat means no special session to redraw districts and preserves current boundaries for 31 seats.

County and South Plains voters favored a constitutional amendment for a one seat Senate by about two to one. Unofficial returns showed Lubbock County voting 1,197 for enlargement and 1,003 against while several counties in the region reported strong opposition. Overall turnout appeared light with a small percentage casting ballots.
