Soviet Union detonates fourth atmospheric nuclear blast

The Atomic Energy Commission reports a fourth Soviet atmospheric test, described as low to intermediate yield, detected east of Stalingrad. Fallout has appeared in Alaska as tests resume, with earlier blasts measured as intermediate and low kiloton sizes.

Light Rains and Storms Modestly Sweep Northwest Texas

Light rains drifted along the Texas New Mexico line while tropical storm Carla moved in the southeastern Gulf. Curry County Fair opened under a downpour delaying a queen's contest and drawing a sparse crowd. Por tales reported an inch of rain as showers hit Bovina Friona Dimmitt and Muleshoe with up to .75 inch in spots. Local observers noted cloudbursts in Lamb and Hockley Counties and scattered showers elsewhere with Lubbock reporting .01 inch by 5 p.m. Area rain coverage continues on page 12.

Vicious Punch Is Expected As Carla Hurtles Toward U S

Hurricane Carla churned toward the U S Gulf Coast with 7 mph winds in the advisory, threatening five to seven foot tides near Cozumel and the Yucatan. Gale winds extend up to 200 miles, with Betsy northeast of Bermuda posing no U S threat.

Titan Roars To 6100 Mile Hit

CAPE CANAVERAL UP I reports a Titan missile test reaching a 6100 mile Atlantic target marking the 28th success in 38 tests. The 98-foot rocket carried a five megaton warhead and was guided to its ocean range target. A capsule retrieved 65 minutes after launch was returned to U S laboratories for study.

Army mobilizes four National Guard divisions for potential call up

Kennedy sets stage for potential nationwide mobilization

The Pentagon placed 475 Guard and Reserve units in 46 states and the District of Columbia on notice for possible call up. Indications exist that up to six regular Army divisions could depart for Germany to reinforce the five U.S. divisions there. Merriam Webster announces Webster's Third New International Dictionary due Sept. 28. City-County Project Aims Mosquito Control In Lake Modifications

Lubbock City County Health Department launches a three year program to modify playa sinks for mosquito control and wildlife use. The study will test leveling terracing and water management to reduce evaporation increase fish production and improve sewage effluent disposal. Principal investigators include the health department director and William L Broadhurst chief hydrologist. NIH approved grant of 17600 to begin Sept 1.
