Pioneer City Woman Dies Who Helped Found Lubbock Library

Mrs. H F Daisy Godeke 82 died in Corpus Christi hospital after a three week illness. She moved to Corpus Christi in 1959 after husband H F Godeke head of Tech mechanical engineering died 1958. Services set in Corpus Christi then Lubbock with Rix Funeral Home handling local arrangements. Godeke helped lay the library corner stone and was first city library board chairman and 1951 Altrusa Woman of the Year. She long taught parliamentary law and chaired library rooms named for her.

Chile defeats Allende as Frei wins sweeping presidency

Pro American General Eduardo Frei secured a landslide victory in Chile, crushing Communist hopes of a quick revolution. Allende conceded after a clear Frei lead, while police contained tense crowds and Allende urged calm and continued resistance.

Monster Satellite OGO Soars Into Orbit From Cape Kennedy

America launches its largest scientific satellite the Orbiting Geophysical Observatory or OGO aboard an Atlas Agena rocket from Cape Kennedy at 8 23 p m EST. The 59 foot insect like craft carries 20 experiments from seven government labs and nine universities to study cosmic rays ultraviolet radiation and space environment. The payload reaches a wide orbit and will relay data after test signals begin.

Negroes Blocked at Meridian White Elementary Schools

About two dozen Black youths including the brother of slain civil rights worker James Chaney were blocked Friday as they attempted to desegregate five all white Meridian, Mississippi elementary schools.

Tanks Burn At Snyder Oil Facility In Fire Disaster

Two 5,000 gallon tanks at the Texas Co. oil facility north of Snyder burned for hours when an auxiliary motor ignited spilled paraffin during tank cleaning. Firemen, aided by Devers Transport and well servicing crews, fought the blaze until about 9 p.m. A tank seam burst sending flames 150 feet into the air. Devers trucks were destroyed and two Devers drivers were among those affected. official damage estimates were not released.

Fire sweeps through Frisco restaurant on Fisherman’s Wharf

A five alarm blaze Friday night tore through Sabella's Restaurant a three story dining spot overlooking the docks at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. Two firefighters treated for smoke inhalation and no serious injuries were reported as more than 250 firefighters and 49 units battled the fire with ambulances summoned to the scene.

Seven in family killed in California and South Carolina

A rash of traffic deaths over the Labor Day weekend leaves seven dead in a Merced California crash and six in a two car collision near Orangeburg South Carolina. The National Safety Council projects 490 to 590 highway deaths for the 78 hour period starting Friday evening. California launches a word of mouth safety campaign and Gov Brown appeals to oil firms to urge safer driving as headlights are urged to be burned.
