Oil Blast Burns Seminole Worker. $250K Loss in Fire

A 45 year old Seminole man, J W Bowles, is critically burned after explosions and a fire at H&J Well 3325 on the Riley Field lease near Seminole. Five oilfield trucks destroyed, with more than $250,000 in equipment losses. Firewehr from four towns battled flames 2:10 to 4:25 PM, cause under study. 15 workers escaped injury. Bowles airlifted to Methodist Hospital, Lubbock.

U S Moves to Halt Castro Arms Buildup

President Kennedy said the United States will use whatever means necessary to stop Cuba from arming against the hemisphere. He cited Soviet missiles and motor torpedo boats in Cuba while stating no evidence of offensive missiles yet supplied. He warned heavy burdens for Cuba and vowed action if aggression continued.

Official Hits Indictment of County Atty Lovelady

Bailey County Atty Karl Lovelady faces a grand jury indictment for one felony and two misdemeanors involving a worthless $50 check and embezzlement. He refuses to resign, calling the case a secretive sabotage attempt and says he will clear his name before deciding next steps. Lovelady, 48, has served as county attorney since 1961 and previously was Bosque County judge and a Texas senator. Page 12.

Missing Boy Found Dead Near Uvalde Sewer Pit

Six year old John Wayne McCandless was found drowned in a sewer pit about 15 feet from the Labor Day camp site in Gamer State Park. Ranger Captain Alfred Allee located the body after a multi day search. authorities ruled out foul play.

Mariner 2 Nears Venus Within Nine Thousand Miles

The Mariner 2 mission will pass Venus at about 9,000 miles, 1,000 miles closer than planned, after a successful trajectory adjustment. NASA JPL’s Jack James praised the maneuver as the first major US space achievement, noting earlier fear of a 233,000 mile miss.

Plane Burns in Ohio Farm Field Killing 11

A twin engine private plane carrying two pilots and nine oil executives from Ashland, Allied, and Frontier Oil crashed southeast of Ravenna, Ohio. U S Officials Admit U 2 May Have Crossed Territory Unintentionally

McSpadden links Estes expose to bankruptcy burden

Lubbock man McSpadden told creditors he would not have been forced into bankruptcy if Pecos promoter Billie Sol Estes had not been publicly exposed by a Pecos newspaper. He said Armour Agricultural Chemical Co. would have helped him and that fertilizer price cutting by Estes caused his losses. He will resume questioning at 9:30 a.m. today in the Post Office Building.
