SAIGON REPORT Asian War Now It s Way Of Life editor s note Following is the first of three articles detailing in Vietnam as it was recently viewed by Jim Richardson Avalanche journal staff writer who took a leave of absence da vies the Astin area Including Vietam combat zones His views and photos reflect his opinions gathered on a five week trip Vietnam smells of poverty and the filth it breeds corruption and the morals it lowers despair and the hopelessness it incurs and of death and the bitterness it plants in the heart of human beings These smells of a war torn nation are not unique to Vietnam Every war in every nation has produced poverty corruption despair and death Vietnam is unique because it is embattled now and Americans are dying now and because unprecedented communications efforts are wasting these smells throughout the world as a million Vietnamese American and Allied soldiers thrust their shoulders against the tide of communism flowing from the North the natives are not necessarily restless partly because war has become an accepted way of life for most South Viet- RICHARDSON names and mainly because Americans go to war loaded with the common denominator of all men money.
