Gaza border fighting erupts as truce efforts falter

Heavy artillery and mortar fire raged along the Gaza demarcation line between Egypt and Israel. UN truce supervisor Maj. Gen. Burns appealed for firm ceasefire answers by 5 p.m. Sunday, while Israel signaled acceptance of the plan amid warnings of self defense if hostilities continue.

Bloodier Labor Day weekend on South Plains roads

One of the region's deadliest weekends as Grim oll reports nine fatalities and many injuries in traffic crashes across the South Plains through midnight Saturday. Four people died near Muleshoe and others in Whitharral Lamesa and east of Lubbock, with two more critically injured and several seriously hurt.

Man Is Found Shot On O'Donnell Street

Moody Gibson about 40 was wounded in the right shoulder by a single blast from a 12 gauge shotgun. Officers found him about 10 p m lying in the street in front of the O Donnell home of R O Brown his father in law. He was taken to Lamesa General Hospital for treatment.

Stalemate in UN disarmament talks between East and West

In the first round of five nation subcommittee talks at the United Nations, East and West held firm on basic differences. The United States pushes to adopt President Eisenhower's proposal for exchanging military inspection teams with the Soviet Union while Moscow demands full discussion of its May 10 disarmament plan. The talks remain closed doors as a Bus Four Foreign Ministers meeting in Geneva looms.

Labor Day Observance Signals Start of Fall Rush

Labor Day marks the shift to fall as many work and school routines begin. Retail stores stay open in Lubbock Plains and no citywide observance or parade is planned while banks post holiday closings. Federal offices close including post offices with mail handling only for outgoing mail and boxes serving inbound mail. Reese AFB resumes flights Tuesday after a Friday closure and base units stress highway safety as personnel travel over the long weekend.

Eight Day Cavalcade Of Homes Show Opens In Lubbock

NAHB officials praise the exhibit as the Lubbock Home Builders Association presents the Cavalcade of Homes on 47th Street between Memphis and Nashville avenues. The show runs from 2 p.m. today until 10 p.m. daily through Sunday September 11.

Stevenson Scores Spending Might Run If Asked To

Two El Paso radio men quoted former Gov. Coke Stevenson saying he would run again if asked. Ray Miller and Joe Roddy of KELP said Stevenson spoke at a Bear Creek banquet near Junction, noting Texas’ rising costs and tax bills since leaving Austin. Snyder Man Feared Drowned At Lake

Snyder oil field operator C. FE. Knight is feared drowned after his boat capsized at Lake J. B. Thomas southwest of Snyder on or about 6 pm. Firemen and officers joined a search. Knight was last seen near the spot where another swimmer drowned earlier this summer while James C. Barnett, water skier, reported Knight piloted the boat before he was thrown and did not reappear.

Rites Held Here For Dr Overton

Dr M C Overton 77 a pioneer physician died after months of illness. He retired from practice June 6 after 54 years of service serving the South Plains. Funeral services at the First Methodist Church drew about 1000 mourners as friends viewed the bronze casket before the ceremony.

One 800 mile satellites and 600 rockets planned

Washington reports that US scientists propose satellites in 1957 or 1958 that may reach 800 miles and circle Earth. As many as 600 rockets could launch in the same period as part of a global Geophysical Year effort to study the upper atmosphere.

Texas Records 20 Fatalities In Labor Day Toll

The Associated Press reports a nationwide Labor Day toll rising sharply with 131 traffic deaths by midnight CST. Texas accounts for at least 20 fatalities, 14 of them in traffic cases including nine in the Lubbock area. Names and places include Dallas wife of Marion Kay Gorman, 16 year old Edna Frusha of Merryville and others near Jasper Uvalde Waco and Maud. The National Safety Council notes the swift rise in deaths. Page 12.
